exhibition opening | 16.09.25

What a journey it has been! We began our opening night with a word from our partners: Regina Barta (Project Coordinator, BIG ART), Christine Dornaus (Managing Director BIG & ARE), Irini Tzaferis (Deputy Chair of the Landstrasse Cultural Commission), and Cornelia Offergeld (Artistic Director KÖR Vienna). We continued our evening with a workshop tour by Max Scheidl of Fantoplast, followed by “Welcome to the Jungle” an exhibition tour by Mary Maggic, where we took a moment of silence for the beauty and wonder of our disappearing forests. We concluded our tour with a screening of the Florestania documentary film. A huge thank you to DJ HotPotPosse for giving us a night to remember!

our trees

Our trees are uniquely fabricated at FANTOPLAST in Vienna, Austria, using 100% regional recycled plastic. They are then brought to VILLAGE IM DRITTEN, where participants in our Florestania workshops create and attach leaves to the trees through injection molding, heat-sculpting, and hand-crafting from plastic waste. Through this collective process, we reimagine waste while physically and symbolically growing a forest together.

These trees will be sold to raise funds for forest care projects, both locally and abroad. If you are interested in becoming a donor and supporting our mission, please contact us at transformplastic[a]florestania.at. By purchasing a tree, you directly support both community artistic creation and ecological stewardship.

moringa tree

H 180 x Ø 125 CM recycled PETG
Starting Price: 10.000 EUR

The Moringa Tree (Moringa oleifera) is a symbol of resilience, regeneration, and radical care. Known as the “miracle tree,” Moringa has been cherished for centuries for its potent medicinal properties: nourishing communities, purifying water, and healing the body. In many traditions, the moringa embodies generosity — offering its leaves, seeds, and roots freely to sustain life. It reminds us that abundance can coexist with simplicity, and that healing is both a personal and collective act.

árbol ceibo

H 216 x Ø 182 CM recycled PETG and PP
Starting Price: 15.000 EUR

Árbol Ceibo or “Tree of Life” (Ceiba pentandra) is a sacred tree across the Amazon and South America. With its towering red blooms and deep roots, the Ceibo is seen as a bridge between worlds — connecting sky, earth, and the unseen realms beneath. It stands for life, strength, and the interconnectedness of all beings. In many stories, its roots hold the memories of ancestors, while its crown shelters the future. The Ceibo reminds us that to grow upward, we must also root deeply into the stories and wisdom that came before us.

twin babassu palms

H 162 x Ø 190 CM H 175 x Ø 187 CM recycled PETG
Starting Price: 12.000 EUR

Our Twin Palms sculpture is modeled after the Babassu palm (Attalea speciosa), a life-sustaining tree native to the Amazon forest. For many Indigenous and rural communities, Babassu is a cornerstone of daily life, giving shade, food, shelter, and fuel. The image of twin palms appears in various cultures as a symbol of peaceful coexistence between two strong beings sharing the same ground while leaving space for each other to thrive. They stand as an emblem of diplomacy, reminding us that harmony and community is built not only in standing strong, but in holding space for one another. Between them, we imagine a hammock, a place of rest, dreaming, and reflection.

walking palm

H 211 x Ø 155 CM recycled PETG
Starting Price: 8.000 EUR

Our Walking Palm (Socratea exorrhiza) sculpture is a tribute to the Amazon’s adaptability and resilience. With its stilt-like roots, this remarkable tree can “walk” toward sunlight and richer soil, slowly repositioning itself to survive and thrive. The walking palm is a living metaphor for adaptability in changing environments — teaching us that movement, even when slow and deliberate, can be an act of strength. It shows that survival is not always about staying in one place, but about sensing where life can continue and daring to move toward it.

florestania workshops

with FANTOPLAST & PRECIOUS PLASTIC VIENNA

In Summer 2025, we hosted a series of ten public workshops facilitated by members of Fantoplast and Precious Plastic Vienna. Participants joined the collective process of transforming plastic waste into an immersive forest. Through this workshop series, participants created an immersive forest installation using  various techniques like hand-shredding, injection molding and heat-sculpting. Our workshops also included public discussions on plastic waste, urban landscapes, and what it means to reforest the imagination.

guest sessions

30.08.25 - GUEST SESSION #4
Roots of Wisdom: Ancestral Herbs with Cristian Mesa

We invite you to a sensory journey into the living pharmacy of the Colombian Amazon. The objective of this workshop is to educate, preserve ancestral wisdom, and promote the aware and responsible use of plants.  We begin with an introduction to the Healing Jungle, plants that heal and purify, followed by  "The Women's Apothecary" and finally to the ethics and sustainability of endangered plants.

Cristian Mesa is a Colombian born and raised medicine man, who specializes in ethnobotanical and traditional medicine practices from native and Indigenous people in the Amazon rainforest.

23.08.25 - GUEST SESSION #3
Plastic & Health with Dr. Maša Kenda

What toxic effects do chemicals in plastics have? What is our exposure and how can we protect our health and the environment? Dr. Maša Kenda is a toxicologist focusing on the role of endocrine disrupting chemicals in cancer development will answer these questions at the Florestania workshop this Saturday.

17.08.25 - GUEST SESSION #2
Re-imagining Urban Identity with Plants with Aki Lee and Oi Pui Hoang

We begin this workshop with an introduction to the Lianjiang Herbalist, a 2021 project in Qingyuan Canton, China where 107 identified plants tell the story of community resilience and belonging in an urban landscape. Next, we will go on a group foraging walk around the St. Marx area to identify the local plant species around us. This collective exercise will bring a fresh new awareness on our relationship with plants and what urban identity means.

19.07.25 - GUEST SESSION #1
Mai Ling Reads Botany of Empire: Plant Worlds and the Scientific Legacies of Colonialism

Mai Ling Reads is an informal monthly reading group, featuring intersectional feminist thinking in a casual, cozy setting. Each time, we have a selected text to learn and unlearn the way of knowing and sharing. This month, our reading session will take place within the framework of Florestania im Dritten and their projects. Together, we'll explore new connections by discussing texts and practices from both Mai Ling Reads and Florestania im Dritten. Prior reading or knowledge is not required! If you don’t have a book, send an email to Mai Ling (mai.ling@gmx.at). We will provide you with the pdf of the book.

project kick-off

Our project officially launched on 15 June! We hosted a participatory performance by multidisciplinary artist Karin Cheng, who led us through a series of somatic exercises inspired by the four seasons of nature. We also unveiled our very first plastic prototype of the Moringa Tree. Participants received our Florestania tote bags to collect their plastic waste for upcoming workshops with Fantoplast and Precious Plastic Vienna.
